The New Zealand Yoga Experience - BOOK HERE

Lake Wanaka, South Island

It has been said by many, of this small country New Zealand, that its glorious lush endless landscapes that range from mountains to lakes and deserts to glaciers, is truly the last remaining untouched beauty of the world!   We know here at Sunshine Yoga, this to be true.

There is just one word that describes Lake Wanaka – SPECTACULAR! Lake Wanaka offers you a pristine turquoise lake, majestic snow capped mountains and is adjacent to the amazing Mt Aspiring National Park with its beautiful rainforest, native bush and rugged peaks.

You will be staying at the exclusive Edgewater Resort, which sits on the edge of Lake Wanaka. It is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere, its up market accommodation, award winning restaurant and café. You can also enjoy a spa, sauna, a game of tennis or a swim in the lake.

This is truly a perfect location for our daily yoga and relaxation. Lake Wanaka has a population of about 3,000 residents. The village of Wanaka is wrapped around the edge of the lake. Ideally located en-route to the West Coast, there is evidence of early Maori settlement followed by Europeans who claimed vast tracts of land for farming.

Early tourism can be traced to 1881 when a paddle steamer commenced trips to the head of the lake. In recent years Lake Wanaka has diversified with the introduction of vineyards, deer farming and increasingly, a small community of artisans. The ski fields of Cardrona are close by.

Sunshine Yoga offers activities that are unique, including planting a native tree on Mou Waho Island and feeding the rare flightless Buff Weka. It is now thriving on this island (once thought to be extinct on the mainland since 1920). Another unique experience (not available to the general public) is combining a boat ride and hike on conservation land that meanders along the lakes edge. Our awe-inspiring trip to Siberia Valley includes a short flight in to the valley, a hike and travel by jet boat back to base. There is a personal touch added to these specially designed tours.

The Program

Lyn offers daily structured sessions of:
    • sunrise energisation, tai chi warm-ups & qigong  • yoga sessions  • relaxation & meditation  • silence time  • leisurely walks around the lake • sunsets and stargazing  • sharing breakfast each morning

Your free time can include:

    • share with new friends  • be alone  • walk, talk and have fun  • choose your own interesting tourist attractions  • enjoy a picnic lunch in isolation by the lake  • enjoy nature • absorb the pristine energy  • take in the amazing scenery  • many hiking tracks & bicycle tracks • swimming • kayaking • enjoy a NZ icecream

Accommodation

The Edgewater Resort is nestled within the spectacular Southern Alps, and located on the shores of Lake Wanaka. The sparkling waters of the lake lap within metres of your room and the magnificent alps provide a distant visual backdrop. Edgewater Resort is renowned for its relaxed atmosphere where you find your own pace of life and re-energise.

The Edgewater Resort has just been awarded the top Enviro Gold award by Qualmark New Zealand. It is the only hotel in Wanaka to hold this award and one of only fifty in New Zealand with a Gold rating.

Soak up the alpine vistas and enjoy the clarity and spectacular colours of the area. Recline and 'chill out' in the spacious open gardens, find your own secluded spot or enjoy the company of others. Resort recreation includes tennis or golf putting. Maybe sooth weary muscles in the Spa and Sauna.

The rooms have been carefully designed to provide comfort while enjoying the views. All rooms open out onto balconies with a view of the grounds or the lake. They are very comfortable, modern with great décor.

Meals

7 breakfasts and 1 dinner at Sargoods Restaurant is provided over the 8 days. You have a choice of eating at local cafe's, bars, restaurants or preparing your own meals (kitchen not available in studio rooms).

Easily available is Edgewater Resort's Sargood Restaurant & Lobby Bar. Their award winning chef infuses seasonal NZ flavours in a range of dishes to suit everyone's palette.

Activities

Most days you will share in a program of yoga, relaxation, meditation and energisation. A shared group breakfast each morning after energisation will set you up for your day's activities.

Fun time, free time and silent time are all part of this wonderful holiday. There are plenty of interesting places to see in and around Lake Wanaka, including wonderful walks and hikes. Time will be available for you to create your own adventures, or in fact, sit and do nothing!!

Adventure 1 - Lake Crucible/Siberia Valley

This is a wonderfully exciting trip to give you the feel of the Southern Alps. The breath-taking scenic flight and the exhilarating jet boat ride makes this adventure exclusive. You will fly from Makarora into remote Siberia Valley. Crossing the river you take a leisurely walk along the Wilkin River to a pick up point. Here the jet boat transports us back to Makaroa for a hot chocolate by the fire.

Adventure 2 - Mou Waho Island Cruise

Our most favourite adventure is the ½ day boat trip across Lake Wanaka to the unique and magical Mou Waho Island with Chris Riley of Eco Wanaka Adventures. A wonderful addition to our previous trips will be the planting of a native tree on the island. Since the felling of the introduced pine trees, the replanting program of native trees on Mou Waho has allowed the birdlife to double in numbers. Feeding the rare flightless Buff Weka which was released and now thriving here is a wonderful experience. The Buff Weka has been extinct on the New Zealand mainland since 1920 because of easy predation by stoats. These birds have a gullible nosey nature which is their downfall. However Mou Waho Island is predator-free therefore a wonderful haven for these very rare birds.

Adventure 3 (optional extra) - Rob Roy Glacier Hike

You will see it all! Valleys, farmland, lush rainforest, picturesque alpine meadows, snow fields, amazing glaciers, huge waterfalls, rugged peaks and the cheeky kea's - all in one spectacular environment. A take-your-time hike to soak up the amazing beauty. When you reach the highest point you will hear the glaciers crack and ice fall and watch the waterfalls created by the constant movement. It is “awesome”.

Adventure 4 (optional extra) – Conservation Land Hike

Chris of Eco Wanaka Adventures has advised the possibility of our using the new track opening up along the lake on conservation land. This will be exclusive as Chris has just obtained a concession for its use. This will involve a boat ride and hike along the lake. More on this later.

There could be changes to the above tours. Confirmation of the tours will be given on your arrival.

Feedback

"Congratulations on a most successful yoga holiday. Thank you for getting me where I needed to be." - Glenda, Brisbane

"Words cannot express what I have gained from this NZ retreat. All I know is that you have helped me incredibly and I feel blessed to have spent this time with you. I feel empowered and enthusiastic about life and that my journey has been enlightened by your presence. You have presented a wholistic retreat that has blended laughter, tears, self realisation and yoga practice. You have taught me to have faith and belief in myself and that I can conquer, face and embrace my demons and become a person who can accept light and love." - Fiona, Melbourne
